When you hear “networking,” do you picture suits, sales pitches, and awkward small talk? You're not alone. But what if networking could feel more like sunshine, tea, and yoga?

I recently attended a small business gathering that flipped the script—and left me feeling more connected and inspired than ever. If you're a small business owner or franchisee who hates traditional networking, this one’s for you.

When you hear the word “networking,” what comes to mind? Suits, awkward small talk, and sitting through sales pitches? That’s the image a lot of us have—and no wonder many small business owners feel like networking just isn’t for them.

But recently, I went to a “networking” event that couldn’t have been more different. Picture this: yoga in the sunshine, a relaxed craft session, and chatting with other small business owners over cups of tea. It was calm, joyful, and—surprisingly—productive.

Big thanks to The Lonely Arts Club at Groobarbs, run by the lovely Emma Hardy, for creating such a warm and welcoming space. It reminded me that the best connections often happen when you’re just being yourself—not pitching, not selling, just showing up.

There were no formalities, no pressure. Just genuine conversations with people who “get it.” People who understand what it’s like to build something from scratch, wear all the hats, and care deeply about the work they do.

I came away from that event feeling refreshed, connected, and inspired—and reminded of something I often share with our franchisees: networking isn’t about ticking a box. It’s about finding your people.

Why Networking Still Matters (Even If You're Not a Fan)

When you're a franchisee or small business owner, especially in wellness, education, or community-based work, it’s easy to feel like you’re doing it all on your own. We’re often so focused on serving others that we forget to build our own support systems.

But networking (when done right) helps you:

• Grow your visibility in your local community

• Build referral relationships and partnerships

• Feel less alone on the rollercoaster of business ownership

• Get inspired by how others are doing things

Make It Work for You

Not all networking is created equal—and that’s OK! You don’t have to say yes to every formal event that comes your way. Look for opportunities that align with your values and your energy.

That might be:

• A local co-working session

• A walk-and-talk meetup with other entrepreneurs

• A craft, yoga, or coffee morning with creative small businesses

• Or yes, sometimes even a more structured event—if it feels like the right crowd

The magic happens when you connect with people who energise you, not drain you.

So, if you're a franchisee or small business owner wondering how to "do networking"—start with what feels good. Your people are out there. And when you find them, it makes all the difference.

Networking doesn’t have to mean stiff suits and sales talk. It can be calm, creative, and truly meaningful—if you choose the right spaces. Whether it’s yoga in the sunshine, a coffee morning, or a relaxed co-working session, real connections happen when you show up as yourself.

So if you're a small business owner or franchisee wondering where to begin, start with what feels good. Find your people. The right kind of networking can make all the difference.
